TEDxCL Relfection

Before going into the research for my topic, I already knew how important music was to my life. What I didn’t know, and what I learned, is how music affects our lives. I learned that it decreases anxiety, increases pain tolerance, and ultimately relieves stress, as shown in the studies mentioned in the Ted Talk. I learned a lot about my topic, and it just made me realize how important music really is to my life. I selected this topic, because music has such a huge role in my life. I listen to music every chance that I get (maybe too much), I am a musician, and music pretty much controls my life. I wanted to apply this to my Ted Talk, and encourage people to listen to more music. I knew how important music was to me, and I was hoping it could change other people's lives, like it did to mine. The most rewarding part of the research process was finding credible sources, and seeing that it would be able to back up my statement. The most frustrating part was finding information th...

Vera Dietz Book Review

Vera Dietz in the novel Please Ignore Vera Dietz by (author) seems like a normal teenager on the outside. On the outside, she is a introverted teenager who lives in a small Pennsylvania. On the inside, she is an alcoholic, with a dad who is a former alcoholic, and a mother who was once a stripper that is no longer there. She is struggling with the death of her best friend, Charlie Kahn, who is framed for a horrible act which he never committed. Following the death of her best friend, Charlie, Vera must learn to adapt to life without him, in a world where everything seems to go against her. This story about moving on, and accepting the truth, is a must read. One thing that I really enjoyed about the novel were the characters, and how they dealt with adversity. Two characters that really stood out to me were Vera and her dad, Ken, both who have experience with alcoholism. Vera knows that her dad was an alcoholic, and that it is in her genes. However, it seems that the only thing tha...

This I Believe

Record audio or upload mp3 >> My name is Reed Michelini, and I believe that music can change lives. It was supposed to be the three day hiking trip in the Pictured Rocks that changed my life. Not the three hour car ride going there. You’re probably thinking that there was some catastrophic event that occured during this car ride, which changed my life. That was not the case. Instead, it was the music that we listened to, driving through the wilderness, on our way to the Upper Peninsula. I was fifteen years old, and six others and I packed into the van that would bring us to our adventure. Before this trip, my music vocabulary was seriously lacking, and it had a very small role in my life. At the time, I didn’t realize how the music that the driver of the van played was going to drastically steer my life in a different direction. Without a phone, I made mental notes in my head of some of the bands we listened to on our trip up. Pink Floyd. The Eagles. The Rolling Stones. I pa...

Fantasy/Science Fiction

Image
I prefer to read fantasy over science fiction. Some of my fantasy novels that I have read are The Ranger's Apprentice, Harry Potter, The Lightning Thief, and many others. I prefect fantasy over science fiction, because it expands what is possible. In fantasy, literally anything you think of can become reality, I really enjoy that aspect of the genre. I still really enjoy science fiction, such as the Hunger Games novels. In the end though, fantasy is my favorite over science fiction.  My favorite fantasy or science fiction location from a novel or movie is the Star Wars universe. When I was a kid, I was absolutely obsessed with Star Wars, and the characters/setting. I love how unique each character is, and the different characteristics of the universe. I would want to go there myself. Despite the constant danger that the characters were always in, I think it would be a crazy adventure, and would be worth whatever happens.

The Art of Racing in the Rain Book Review

The Art of Racing in the Rain Book Review Garth Stein’s novel, The Art of Racing in the Rain, introduces readers to the narrator Enzo, who is a rather special character. Enzo is a dog. Enzo, however, is unlike other dogs. Enzo believes himself to be more of a human than a dog, and he goes about his everyday life, alongside his owner Denny. Denny, an aspiring race car driver, is married to his wife Eve, and together they share a daughter, named Zoe. Enzo, because of his perspective as a dog, is able to see all sides of the family, no matter how good, or bad. In this novel, Enzo is just an observer to the pain that is constantly riddling this family’s life. Although he can not do much, Enzo works to the best of his ability fulfill his duty as a dog, as he often points out in the novel. This novel tells the story of a struggling family, led by aspiring racecar Denny Swift, and together he and Enzo go on a race that will shape their life as they know it. One thing that I really enjoy...

Infographic Debate Project - Does technology get in the way of learning?

Image
Description:  Above is my infographic, on how technology helps us learn, rather than getting in the way. Learning with technology does not involve just the classroom. Technology in general, helps mankind learn so much about the world around us. It keeps us engaged, allows us to easily learn information, and constantly changes the world. Without technology, we would be far behind where we are today. Reflection: 1. I picked this topic, because technology is something we use everyday. I also disagreed with the fact that technology gets in the way of learning, because what it does for us is so important. I picked this side, because technology helps me everyday in school. In fact, this blog is using technology, and it is helping me learn. I definitely believe in my statement, because it impacts my life everyday, and it changes the world we are in. 2. When researching this topic, I found it pretty clear that the benefits of technology, and how it helps us learn, greatly outweighe...

Favorite Narrator

My favorite narrator has to be in Ernest Hemingway's,  The Old Man and the Sea.  The novel is told in third person, so we know nothing about the narrator. However, the narrator is able to tell the readers what is going on in the old man's mind, as well as what he has gone through. The novel follows the thoughts and experience of a fisherman in Cuba. Although the plot is very simple, I really enjoyed the narration. It has been a while since I read this book, but I remember how the narrator knew about the thoughts and background of the old fisherman. The book deals with an old fisherman's quest to catch a marlin, and details how he struggles trying to bring it in the boat. Before he caught the marlin, he was unlucky, and looked badly upon by his town because of this. He manages to harpoon the giant fish, but on his way back, it gets devoured by sharks. He is left only with the skeleton of the marlin. This is my favorite, because although the plot is very simple, the narra...
